ATX Hackerspace has a CNC Router with a 5ft x 8ft bed that was custom made for the membership to use.  The router is capable of handling a variety of materials from plywood, hardwood, and various plastics. It will do very clean vector cuts that will allow you fabricate incredible things like furniture, signage, custom parts, and artwork.  This course will teach you how to use this machine and others like it to fabricate items from line drawings.  The CNC Router course is a two-part course that will take place on two evenings in the same week.

 

Requirements:

You must wear eye protection while using the CNC router. Please remember to bring a notepad or another way that you can take notes during the class.  

 

Part 1:

In Part 1 of the course, you will learn the theory and fundamentals of operating and programming CNC machines and using VcarvePro to create tool paths and G-code which a CNC machine can use to fulfill your instructions. You will get instructions and go through all the steps to create a G-code file which will be used in Part 2.

  • Basic theory of CNC and robotic manufacturing.
  • Wide range of cutting ops.
  • Materials, feedrates, bit selection for your job, shopping for carbide.
  • Which file formats you should use.
  • How to import CAD drawings and vectors into VcarvePro.
  • How to set-up your tool paths and cutting preferences in Vcarve.
  • How to export a G-code file that will give instructions to the CNC.

 

Part 2:

In Part 2 of the course, you will receive hands-on training on setting up the CNC Router, and using your G-code from Part 1 on the machine.  You must take Part 1 - Designing for CNC and VcarvePro before you may take Part 2 - CNC Router Operation. The skills that you learn in Part 1 are essential and required for Part 2.
